Autonomous living for young people with disabilities

CENTO, Italy hosted on the 28th of April 2022 the first transnational meeting of the Erasmus+  Basic Action 2 project titled “Independence way”, a strategic partnerships in the field of education, training and education focused around the theme of Autonomous living for young people with disabilities.

The main goal of the program is to teach skills necessary for independent living, important for both young people with disabilities and young people with typical development, giving them the opportunity to become full-fledged citizens and to have control over their own lives. The autonomous living of people with disabilities is now at the heart of European education and social policy with the ultimate goal of creating the conditions for a ‘society for all’

This innovative project will last 24 months (February 2022 to February 2024) and will be implemented by a group of European NGOs, expert in the field, under the leadership of  Fondazione Don Giovanni Zanandrea Onlus (Italy) in collaboration with “CYA KRICK” (Republic of North Macedonia), the Greek NGO “Changing myself…I change the world”, ” Gruppo Ingegneria Gestionale s.r.l. from Italy and the Latvian NGO Latvijas Autisma apvieniba.

Specific objectives of the project

• Identifying the special needs of young people with disabilities related to independent living

• Designing an individual educational plan for learning skills necessary for independent living (Individual Educational Plan)

• Designing innovative activities involving young people with disabilities and young people with typical development

• Production of an educational video offering smart, cheap solutions and innovative technical and technological tools useful for independent living.  

• Training of youth workers in techniques and methods that will help young people with disabilities in their daily lives as well as for their participation in social life. 

Project deliverables

  • A training seminar will be hosted by the Greek NGO Changing myself…I change the world with the participation of 20 people (5 from each participating country) and 2 trainers, one from Greece and one from Latvia. As part of the training, participants will visit various educational institutions and projects working with people with disabilities, parents’ associations, etc.
  • A number of educational tools will be created to help parents, educators, caretakers, youth workers, etc ..and train young people with disabilities on independent living skills as well social integration.
  • It expected that during the duration of the project 4 experiential workshops (one in each participating country) will take place, in which 5 young people with disabilities and 5 with typical  development will live together for 3 days, experiencing in a practical and challenging way real life issues.
  • The results of the program will be publicly presented in each participating country with the active involvement of young people with disabilities and young people with typical development, youth organizations, parents’ associations, representatives of local authorities, etc.
